Dominique Dawes “Gold Medal Mom” and Olympic Gold Medalist visits The Boys and Girls Club
This past February, Coca-Cola and Family Dollar teamed up for the “Gold Medal Mom” promotion benefiting The Boys and Girls Club. The sweepstakes was open to Family Dollar shoppers and members of the “My Coke Rewards” (www.mcr.com) loyalty program. The winner of this promotion, who wished to remain anonymous, donated the $5,000 Grand Prize to The Baton Rouge Boys and Girls Club.
A check presentation was held on Tuesday, June 10th at the Alaska Street Boys and Girls Club location. Special guest and former Olympic Gold Medalist, Dominique Dawes, who was introduced by Victoria Griffin, Board Member for The Boys and Girls Club, attended this special event along with 70 Boys and Girls Club kids.
Dominique Dawes is an Olympic Gold medalist and three-time Olympian. She is the only American gymnast to medal at three different Olympic Games in the team competition, and the first African-American gymnast to win an Olympic Gold medal.
“I just birthed a baby not too long ago and I’m a new mom myself. I know that you know being a mom it’s so important that you’re an example to your kid. We want to make sure these kids understand that their good habits of physical activity starts now when they’re eight years old, seven years old, when they’re nine and ten. So they can continue it for the rest of their lives,” Dawes said.
Dominique led the kids in several Triple Play program exercises and spoke to them about the importance of making physical activity and good eating habits a part of everyday life. Triple Play, supported by Coca-Cola, is a Boys & Girls Clubs of America signature health and wellness program.
“The kids had a great day and we were proud to be a part of it” said John Miller, Division Vice President, Baton Rouge Coca-Cola.
